I am currently a staff writer for the Monterey County Weekly, writing news and features for both the print edition and the blog.
From a very young age I had an intense interest in journalism and politics. I started reading the newspaper at age 7, and by 12, I wanted to be a reporter. At San Diego State University I majored in political science, and minored in journalism, spending most of my time outside of class at The Daily Aztec. I started as a reporter covering student government and moved up to city editor, then editor-in-chief. In my senior year I interned in the San Diego Bureau of The Los Angeles Times.
As a professional reporter I cover city and county governments, elections, courts, police, as well as human interest topics.
I started my own blog in 2010, and soon was freelancing for another online news outlet on a regular basis, occasionally serving as a guest editor.
In 2011 I was honored to be chosen as a Knight Digital Media Center (KDMC) Fellow. I spent one week at U.C. Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism for an intense multimedia training course. We learned all the basics and beyond of how to create and maintain news websites, use social media, take our own photos and videos, create data maps, and much more.
I returned to KDMC in December 2014, for the “Social Media for Content Creators” Workshop. I frequently take part in workshops, seminars and webinars for training in the latest social media and web trends.
Once a Reporter…
I like to report. That’s the theme of my life. I enjoy discovering new information and passing it on to others. I especially enjoy finding out things that will improve the quality of life for the community. My goal is always to be accurate, objective and fair. In addition, I strive to be interesting and instructive; readers often tell me I am able to explain complex ideas in a relatable way. When it comes to feature stories and web content, I work at being creative, informational, and entertaining.
Social media is another extension of reporting which I thoroughly enjoy. I am constantly learning new ways to share content through various outlets. It’s another way to tell a story.
